INTERNATIONAL CAMP MINISTRY . . . In 1999, the Department of Camp Ministries took a team of teachers to the Philippines and worked with missionaries in the Philippine National Youth Camp and ministered to over 700 high school and college youth. At that camp, the department committed to raising the funds necessary for them to be able to have camp and not have to worry about raising funds in a part of the world that is impoverished.
In January 2000, the department had the opportunity to go to Russia and the Ukraine to help conduct seminars on youth and camp ministries as a part of a team with the Departments of Church Ministries and Missions. We were able to minister to over 120 youth leaders in that part of the world. We were also able to visit with missionaries in the Czech Republic and Portugal about camp ministries with the possibility of returning to conduct seminars there.
We not only want to provide funds for camp ministries in mission areas but to take teams of capable teachers and leaders to those areas to lay foundations for effective camp ministries.
In the last two years, the Department of Camp Ministries has been able to partner with our Missions Department and the Department of Church Ministries to do seminars and plan camp programs in other parts of the world. In September 2002 we met with Missions Director and missionaries in Honduras to plan and lay the groundwork for a camp ministry to help them in outreach and youth activities. In January 2003 we traveled to Brazil for the second time to work out definite plans for local camps and future plans for a national camp for our missionaries and their churches. They are supposed to have their first camp in April 2003 and our department has also helped them financially through our International Camp Students Fund.
The International Camp Students Fund was started to help us fund two camps each year in the Philippines, the Sunbeam Camp and the National Youth Camp. The money for this fund comes from offerings taken at our SonRise and SonQuest camps. Each year the funds are made available to missionaries who have a camp ministry in their country. The funds are available for student needs, and not for buildings and maintenance. The purpose of the fund was to make it possible for everyone who wanted to go to camp to be able to attend even if they did not have the money that was required. We pay transportation, scholarship and program costs so that these kids may have an opportunity to hear the Gospel.
In the past three years we have provided some funds for camps in Honduras, Mexico, Brazil, Cape Verde and the Philippines. The International Camp Students Fund provides approximately $3,000 per year for these camp ministries around the world. Every other year we take a team of teachers, preachers and musicians to the Philippines to help them with their camp, and in April 2003 we took a team, and witnessed around 120 decisions with over 50 professions of faith. If you are interested in going on one of the these trips, contact the camp director for more information. The next trip to the Philippines is scheduled for April 2005.
